Hi, I’m Beth, a South Wales based photographer specialising in portraiture, branding and fashion photography.

I’ve got about 9 years of experience but launched my business in 2024 officially, and have had the opportunity to work with such wonderful people!

1. Educating your clients is just as important as taking photos for them.
What’s your process? What can they expect from working with you?
Never assume clients know what copyright, licensing, usage or RAW files are either. Having a polite & digestible way to explain usage limitations or why you don’t send out raw files in your back pocket usually solves any queries.
2. Other photographers ≠ competition.
Building a community of creatives that support one another is SO important. It’s easy to feel lonely when you’re a freelancer, and having friends in the same field as you giving advice or being a shoulder to lean on when you’re struggling will keep you going. There’s enough clients out there for everyone.
3. Feeling behind is more common than you think.
It’s part of growth. There will be many times you question your skill, your passion and whether this is the thing for you, and you think people are miles ahead from where you are. But your journey is a marathon, not a race. When you feel like you’re behind, it just means you’re about to level up. You wouldn’t have got this far if you weren’t meant for greater things.
4. Boundaries are non-negotiable
They differ from person to person but when you create a boundary, whether that be personal or professional, stick to it. Retainers and contracts = non negotiable to have before a photoshoot is booked. My artistic style = non negotiable except for minor tweaks. Scheduling in time away from the business to recharge = non negotiable.
5. You can’t be a people pleaser.
This one was tough. I found myself burning out trying to take on everything that I could. Saying no is just as important to saying yes. Doing a project at 50% passion because you’re taking on 100% of enquiries is so much worse than doing a project at 100% passion because you’re taking on 50% of enquiries. So now when my calendar starts to look full, rather than trying to squeeze in collaborations, I close my tfp books until I know I can put all my effort into them.
